Traditional Suul Cup (Jan) Making Workshop 4-Week Special Course Dates: November 4, 11, 18, 25, 2025 (Tuesdays) Time: 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Language: Korean / English Instructor: Professor Sunook Park, California State University Long Beach President, Korea Suul Institute Founder/Owner, Narin Distillery Course Overview This 4-week hands-on workshop introduces the traditional and contemporary process of making Suul jan — small ceramic cups used for Korean alcoholic beverages such as Makgeolli, Cheongju, and Soju. Participants will explore both the functional and cultural dimensions of Suul jan through wheel throwing, trimming, glazing, and a final group exhibition. ⸻ Lesson 1 — November 4, 2025 Introduction & Wheel Throwing Basics Learn fundamental wheel-throwing techniques to create small cups for Makgeolli, Cheongju, and Soju. Focus on form, proportion, and hand coordination. Lesson 2 — November 11, 2025 Trimming, Refining, and Tradition Refine your thrown forms through trimming and surface finishing. Discussion on the functions, aesthetics, and traditional values of Suul jan in Korean drinking culture. Lesson 3 — November 18, 2025 Glazing Techniques and Surface Expression Explore various glazing methods, color selections, and expected outcomes. Understand how surface treatment enhances both the visual and tactile experience of the cup. Lesson 4 — November 25, 2025 Group Exhibition, Critique, and Tasting A final showcase and critique of participants’ works. Includes a short lecture on the history of Korean Suul and Suul jan, along with a guided tasting and food pairing session to experience the spirit of Korean Suul culture.
